Dear Swimmers
We know there are alot of excited people out there, so here it is, the official entry for this years swim (below). We are expecting a very special year based on the huge number of queries we have been getting since about October. We are hearing of people travelling from abroad specifically to take part in the event !!
The team, as ever, have been working hard to take on your feedback from last year to improve the event, and we believe you will notice some improvements, both from a racing point of view as well as before and after the main event.
Some of the changes that are worthy of note now:
- Camping and parking - The Parking arrangements will be slightly different this year, as we have had the kind loan of the field behind UTRC. You will also be allowed to camp on this site.
- Team events - It is not mentioned in the entry details enclosed, but there will be a team event this year. We would encourage entries from both official clubs (ie: Thames Valley Triathletes, Wycombe Masters etc) as well as groups of friends who want to race as a team (ie: Team Blonde ?!?). Teams of 4, and points are given out based on your finishing position. Please make it clear on your entry form which team you are a member of. The leader of each team must detail the other members on their entry form.
One word of caution, with popularity comes responsibility. We are getting alot of requests from people who are not the most experienced of swimmers. Please bear in mind that this is a significant endurance event (anyone who has done it will tell you that). We will do our best to judge every entry as to whether we feel you are going to manage it comfortably. Please give us as much honest information as you can about your swimming ability. Please do not be offended if we ask you for a little more information before accepting or even declining your entry. We have had issues with non-swimmers attempting the event in previous years. Our interest is that you safely finish and enjoy the event. We cant always guarantee the weather and there is plenty of opportunity to get cold and cramp.
As a general guideline we would expect the following:
- That you are able to comfortably do a continuous 3km pool swim.
- We are certainly happy to have swimmers do the event in speedos (ie: non-wetsuit), but these will generally be experienced open water swimmers. If you are new to OW swimming we would expect you to be using a "swimming" wetsuit, as well as having swam in the open water (using it) at least 4-5 times before the event.
If you have any further questions please email this address, which we will be keeping a close eye on upto the event.
Kind regards
The Henley Swim team
(Jez, Tom, Iain, Mick)
